The Hoke County Board of Commissioners voted Monday morning in a resumed meeting to effectively stop new major subdivision development in Hoke County until further notice.
Under the county ordinance, a “major subdivision” is six or more houses.
The board specified that the motion will apply to any major subdivision development not already submitted to the planning office as of today, Monday, April 28, 2025.
The vote came after a lengthy and in-depth update on the water situation in Hoke County, presented by Utilities Director James McQueen. McQueen laid out for the board that the county is largely at its water capacity for new development in some areas, and asked commissioners for a written directive for guidance on handling allocation for builders.
The board discussed plans to hold a public hearing about the matter at the board’s meeting May 19, 2025.
The board members also spoke of having a retreat to more fully discuss water and sewer needs in Hoke County.
