Hoke County local government announced Tuesday afternoon that the county is implementing voluntary water use restrictions for
its residential, commercial and governmental water customers.
“Due to current drought conditions and in creased seasonal water demand, Hoke County is implementing Stage 1 Water Restrictions in accordance with the County’s Water Short age Response Plan,” the announcement said.
“These restrictions are effective immediately and apply to all residential, commercial, and governmental water customers.”

Stage 1 water restrictions are being implemented because “regional drought conditions have intensified, with rainfall well below
average, as confirmed by state drought monitoring resources,” and because “ongoing system demand continues to increase, and
conservation is necessary to maintain adequate supply for essential needs,” the announcement said. Stage 1 focuses on voluntary
conservation and reduction of non-essential water use, including:

  • Limit outdoor irrigation to the minimum amount needed.
  • Avoid watering during peak evaporation hours (10 AM–6 PM).
  • Reduce vehicle washing where possible.
  • Delay nonessential uses such as pressure washing, pool refills, and landscape establishment.
  • Fix household leaks promptly.
  • Use water efficient appliances and fixtures whenever possible.
The Hoke County Utilities Department is monitoring the system levels daily, and coordinating with state water resources officials, the county said. If conditions “require escalation to Stage 2 restrictions,” it will notify customers. Some ways that county water customers can help include making small reductions in water use to help preserve system capacity. “Your cooperation protects our water supply, supports fire protection capability, and helps avoid more restrictive measures,”the announcement said.
  • For questions or to report water related concerns, please contact the Hoke County Utilities Department at (910) 875-6704.
The announcement was for Hoke County water customers. The City of Raeford has its own, separate water system.
